Second Grade
Religion
Second Grade is a sacramental preparation year.
We focus on the Sacrament of the Eucharist as the true Body and Blood of Christ.
We study the Four Pillars of the Catholic faith.
What do we believe?
How do we worship?
How do we live like Christ?
How do we pray?
We attend weekly Mass.
We visit the Blessed Sacrament on First Friday.
We participate in meaningful service projects.
We participate in various prayer services throughout the school year especially during the seasons of Advent and Lent when we pray the Stations of the Cross.
Our goal is to produce grade-level readers and beyond by the end of the school year.
We focus on determining the reading level a student is at and charting a course of instruction for that student.
We use Developmental Reading Assessments, Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) and teacher observation to accomplish this.
We use a variety of resources to include, a grade level reading text, and an assortment of leveled readers for students below, on, and above grade level.
We use two phonics programs to help students navigate through the pronunciation of the English language.
Language Arts
We teach English Grammar focusing on the structure of the English language and how the language works.
We have a comprehensive spelling program that challenges students to spell words with a variety of vowel and consonant combinations.
We concentrate on writing skills beginning with sentence writing and then progressing to paragraph writing.
We also reinforce manuscript handwriting and introduce cursive handwriting.
Our Math program is comprehensive.
Addition and subtraction are major areas of concentration progressing to calculations with three-digit numbers.

The program includes literature, poetry, songs, maps, and charts/ graphs/diagrams/tables, and timelines.
Our Science program focuses on three major areas:

Students learn the scientific method.
Students engage in a variety of scientific investigations.
Students experience working as a team as they conduct various experiments.
