The focus of the GSCS Library/Media Center is to build resourceful, critical thinkers with a passion for reading and lifelong learning. Our library works in close collaboration with teachers and the local public library (linked here) to ensure the most relevant, accessible information to lesson plans and curriculum. Elementary (K-5th) will learn about basic library etiquette, parts of a book, the different book genres, story elements, the dewey decimal system, and more. Middle school grades (6th-8th) will learn good data management practices, information organization, plagiarism avoidance, copyright issues, and research skills.
Please feel free to visit our catalog, linked here and below, and explore some of the 16,000 resources available to our students! Below you will find library policies, as well as links to library class resources, including the library enrichment syllabus for grades K-8, and the Battle of the Books academic team link.
Students are permitted to check out three books at a time, unless performing research which allows them to check out more than three books at a time. Kindergarten will begin checking out books after the Christmas break. Students are expected to adhear to the "five finger rule," when checking out books (see "Links" below). Students will not be charged late fees. Research shows that libraries get more materials back when late fees are no longer in the equation. At Good Shepherd we expect our students will be good stewards of the library materials, will take good care of library materials, and will return library materials on time so that other students may use them. Students may be charged for materials that are destroyed, however, and this will be a case-by-case basis.
