Battle of the Books is a voluntary program that encourages students to read a diverse selection of great literature and then have fun competing with peers from other schools in our diocese. The competition is quiz-bowl style and requires the teams to determine the titles and authors based on quotes from the books. These quotes are chosen to test the depth of knowledge of the reading. Teams earn one point for the correct title and one point for the correct author for each quote.
Our 2021-22 4th/5th Grade team read fifteen books this year and earned 2nd place at the diocesan competition! The reading list contained childhood classics like My Side of the Mountain, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, and Pippi Longstocking, as well as more modern favorites like Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, A Boy Called Bat, Out of My Mind, and War Horse. The students read a biography of Ruth Bader Ginsberg and literature that celebrates diversity like Box: Henry Brown Mails Himself to Freedom, How to Catch a Tiger, and Other Words for Home.
We hope to compete at all levels in 20222-23 with three teams (2nd/3rd, 4th/5th, and 6th-8th).
